SAN CARLOS, Calif., May XX, 2026 — The Addario Lung Cancer Medical Institute (ALCMI), a nonprofit organization committed to making lung cancer a survivable disease, has announced the appointment of Jorge J. Nieva, MD, to its Scientific Leadership Board. Dr. Nieva serves as Professor of Clinical Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California (USC) and is a nationally recognized expert in lung cancer.

"We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Nieva to ALCMI's Scientific Leadership Board," said Richard Erwin, ALCMI Executive Director and COO. "His deep expertise in lung cancer, his pioneering work in young lung cancer, and his devotion to advancing clinical research make him an invaluable addition to our scientific board. He embodies the spirit of innovation that drives everything we do at ALCMI."

Dr. Nieva brings decades of clinical and research experience. He earned his medical degree from UC Irvine College of Medicine, completed an internal medicine residency at UC San Diego Medical Center, and a hematology/oncology fellowship at Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation. He holds three board certifications from the American Board of Internal Medicine in internal medicine, hematology, and medical oncology.

Throughout his career, Dr. Nieva has led significant advancements in cancer research. At Scripps Research Institute, he developed technology for detecting circulating tumor cells in blood and contributed to the understanding of immune mechanisms in cancer. At Billings Clinic in Montana, he chaired the department, established multidisciplinary cancer programs, and led research in gene therapy and immunotherapy. His teams received recognition for clinical trial excellence from the National Cancer Institute and the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

Dr. Nieva joined the faculty of the Keck School of Medicine in 2014.

"ALCMI's model of accelerating investigator-initiated trials represents the type of infrastructure that advances scientific progress," said Dr. Nieva. "I look forward to advancing the organization’s mission of transforming lung cancer into a survivable disease."

David P. Carbone, MD, PhD, Director of the James Thoracic Oncology Center at The Ohio State University Medical Center and Chair of ALCMI's Scientific Leadership Board, stressed the significance of the appointment.

"Dr. Jorge Nieva exemplifies the type of scientist and clinician who strengthens the initiatives underway at ALCMI," said Dr. Carbone. "I look forward to the contributions he will make to ALCMI and the greater lung cancer research community."
